AMEMR Workshops

Following request from previous AMEMR delegates, a series of workshops are planned for the Wednesday afternoon session of the conference.

Workshops are free to attend but have limited capacity to please reserve you place early. Places will be offered on a first come first served basis.

Further workshops opportunities will follow shortly.

Modelling marine biodiversity

Organised by Baris Salihoglu, Sinan Arkin and Ekin Akoglu from METU | Middle East Technical University

Recent studies indicate that assessment of biodiversity at different levels of ecological organisation is the key towards understanding the state of marine ecosystems. The variety of species or functional traits in an ecosystem regulates the functioning of that ecosystem as well as the services that it provides. Environmental change can modify biodiversity by changing the relative fitness of organisms within communities, which in turn determines the way in which the ecosystems react to environmental change.

This workshop aims at gathering scientists that focus on modelling the feedback between marine biodiversity and environmental change. The workshop will focus on approaches towards modelling biodiversity but especially promote discussions on cascading effect of changing biodiversity through different trophic levels.

Limited to 30 people
Workshop time: 2hrs

Public and Media Engagement for Researchers

This discussion based workshop will  be run by Kelvin Boot. Kelvin is freelance science communicator with a wide of experience including: editor of The Marine Scientist; broadcaster for BBC, science writer; communications trainer.
In this informal session Kelvin will provide training in:
  • engagement and dissemination of your research outside of academia
  • examples of best practice in public and media engagement
  • dealing  with controversy

Mentoring Lab

If there is sufficient interest we will offer a mentoring session. This session will involved small group discussions with mentors on various topics for early career scientists.  Along with relevant science discussions, mentors will offer advice on:
  • applying for post docs
  • applying for fellowships and grants
  • getting the most out of your project to strengthen your CV research leadership
Please indicate your interest in such an event below.

ERSEM: hands on modelling workshop

ERSEM (European Regional Seas Ecosystem Model) is an ecosystem model of marine biogeochemistry and the lower trophic levels of the marine food-web. The hands on workshop will introduce participants to ERSEM and its modular structure. This will include a demonstration of the user friendly version (running the model, altering the model) as well as visualization of the model output. Afterwards, participants will be provided with a number of examples and case studies ranging from modification of parameters, alteration of the food web by adding and/or subtracting organisms as well as changing physical forcing to simulate climate change.

The workshop does not require any prior knowledge of coding or modelling experience, and is open to scientists of any field.

Limited to 10 people
Workshop time: 2-3hrs

Time Series Analysis in Earth System Analyses

Picture
Organised by John Bruun from Plymouth Marine Laboratory
In this workshop we demonstrate a tool which enables both climatic inter-decadal properties and seasonal phenomena structures of the Marine System (simulation and observation) to be identified, estimated and verified within one analysis framework.  For example this can reveal distinguishing ecosystem biome timing and structure features for shelf-seas and/or long term climatic influence of El Niño and La Niña on phytoplankton ecosystem health.

The workshop will include a hands on demo-and-discussion. Although not compulsory attendees can bring their own 3D time-series data for initial evaluation, time permitting. Data must be regular gridded with at least a 10 year time series. You’ll need your own laptop with R pre-installed. More details will be provided nearer the time.

Limited to 15 people
Workshop duration: 2-3 hours
