AMEMR Workshops
Following the success of the workshops run at the last AMEMR we run a series of workshops on the Wednesday afternoon. Depending on level of interest we may extended the workshops to Friday 17th July.
Workshops are free to attend to all AMEMR delegates but have limited capacity so please reserve your place early.
Places will be offered on a first come first served basis.
We encourage community approach to the AMEMR conferences, and as such are keen to provide a programme of workshops that meet the needs of our broad community. If you would like to suggest a workshop topic either that you would run yourself or suggest someone else who could lead. Please contact amemr@pml.ac.uk

Hands-on modelling workshops
Play with ERSEM
ERSEM (European Regional Seas Ecosystem Model) is an ecosystem model of marine biogeochemistry and the lower trophic levels of the marine food-web. This hands-on workshop will introduce the latest version of ERSEM. All participants will be provided with the software to run ERSEM in a water column setting. They will be walked through running the model, visualizing its results, and customizing ecosystem structure and parameterisation to address specific scientific challenges. We will provide a number of case studies covering changing biogeochemical parameters, altering the food web by adding and/or removing species and functional types, and changing physical forcing to simulate climate change. The workshop does not require any prior knowledge of coding or modelling experience, and is open to scientists of any field. Limited to 10 people Workshop time: 2-3hrs Contact: Sevrine Sailley (PML) for more information Transforming models into decision support systems
Ecosystem models have improved our understanding of how marine systems function, and been used extensively to test hypotheses and generate forecasts. However, factors such as usability and run-time, as well as complexity of model results and their interpretations, often limit their use in the decision making processes. This workshop will explore principles and strategies for transforming ecosystem models into fit-for-purpose decision support tools, using real-world examples from sectors such as fisheries management, conservation and aquaculture.

Engaging Biologists in Modelling
While molecular biology is owned largely by biologists, mathematical biology is often disowned by biologists. Understanding mathematical biology is vital in the critical assessment and building of next generation models. As expressed at previous AMEMR meetings, we need to make simulation modelling attractive to biologists, to make it mainstream in teaching. This workshop will appeal to those who teach or train the next generation of marine scientists.
Limited to 20 people Workshop duration: 2-3 hours Organised by Kevin Flynn, University of Swansea Mentoring Session
If there is sufficient interest we will offer a mentoring session for early career scientists. This session will involve small group discussions with mentors. Along with relevant science discussions, mentors will offer advice on:
